• Opened in 1961 as the Civic Center, its name was changed in December of 1999 when the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins signed an $18 million, 10 year agreement with the Pittsburgh based Mellon Bank. The arena hosted its first show, the Ice Capades, on September 19, 1961. Other noteworthy performances include: The Beatles on September 14, 1964 and Elvis Presely on June 25, 1973. The Arena also boasts the largest, stainless steel, retractable dome roof in the world which can open or close in two minutes.
