Information: Built in 1920, the Golden Gate Theater served as a movie theater for over five decades. It was converted into a two screen theater in the 1960s and again restored to a single auditorium by the Shorenstein Hayes Nederlander group. The Golden Gate Theater reopened in 1979 as a center for performing arts with its original look and feel intact. It stands as a grand theatre in somewhat of a less glorious neighborhood and the four story vertical art deco sign remains a Franciscan landmark to this day. The Golden Gate Theatre is one of the Bay Area's premier venues for traveling Broadway acts and its rich history and 1920s design both add to every performance on its stage.
