| The Longhorns meet the Sooners in a battle for bragging rights where the Red River draws a line in the sand. Cross that line and you're about to be a part of one of the most heavily contested rivalries in sports. You see, Oklahoma and Texas don't take their football lightly and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more heated conflict anywhere else in the NCAA come gameday.
Originating in 1900 and named after a section of the Red River that divides Oklahoma and Texas, this rivalry set its roots in U.S. history as Oklahoma was still a U.S. territory at the time.
2005 marked the 100th meeting of the two schools and brought with it a new name. It's now officially referred to as the Red River Rivalry.
A couple of things are still guaranteed. One, the rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma will always be affectionately referred to as the Red River Shootout. Two, there will be no shortage of top-notch, leave-it-all-on-the-field football played any time Oklahoma and Texas square off across the field from each other to start a rivalry game.
We'll see you, down by the river!
