Tool Artist Information
Prepare for a musical journey unlike anything you have experienced before. TickCo is your source to see live the enigma that is Tool!
Formed in Los Angeles in 1990, Tool takes elements of classic prog rock and alt metal to create the unique style they play for their fans. This is a thinking man's band. Tool does not engage in mindless banter or waste time with topics that are not of some relevance. A track from Tool is an odyssey of sorts, forcing the listener to creatively think about the subject matter while being enthralled by the actual music.
It only took a couple of years of writing music and playing before Tool unleashed the Opiate e.p. on the world. A brash seven song affair, Opiate was just a foreshadowing of what was to come. The next year Undertow was released. At a time when grunge was king and poppy punk was gaining momentum, Tool reminded fans what great metal sounds like, and did so in such a dark way that the band crossed over into other genres of music.
Undertow topped out at Number 50 on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart, but laid the groundwork for a serious increase in popularity. Tool released the AEnima album three years later in 1996 and simply exploded. AEnima peaked at Number Two on the album chart. The mysterious mannerisms of the band, the dark subject matter and imagery of the music, and the band's steadfast refusal to market themselves as individuals, preferring to allow the music to speak for itself, added to the legend of Tool.
World-wide attention followed and Tool began landing headlining spots on big festivals such as Coachella (twice) and Lollapalooza. Their concerts are incredible, characterized by great music, odd videos, and singer Maynard James Kennan's habit of facing the backdrop rather than the audience during shows and hiding in the shadows. Tool wants their fans to focus on the music and imagery, and ignore the actual individuals which comprise the band. In an era where so many artists crave attention, Tool's philosophy is downright refreshing and something to be admired.
