Sunny Day Real Estate Artist Information

Some music purists believe emo came to a peak, then died dramatically during the brief three year existence of Seattle's own Sunny Day Real Estate. The return of that line-up in 2009 is a welcome sight for alternative music, and TickCo is the source you need for tickets to see SDRE during their 2009 reunion tour!

The first true wave of emo came out of Washington, D.C. in the mid-eighties. After the demise of the early hardcore bands such as Minor Threat and The Faith, bands such as Embrace, Rites of Spring and Fugazi took some of the characteristics of hardcore, slowed down the tempos and created a genre of music steeped in power and emotion.

Several years later in 1992, a band by the name of Empty Set came into being in Seattle. Empty Set was comprised of vocalist and guitarist Dan Hoerner, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith. When Nate Mendel left for a spell to tour with another band, a high school friend of William Goldsmith by the name of Jeremy Enigk joined the band. With Dan Hoerner moving over to bass, Jeremy Enigk took over duties on vocals. Soon Mendel returned, and the original line-up of Sunny Day Real Estate was in place.

Taking time to perfect their craft, SDRE played live many times and wrote many songs before the release of their debut album Diary in 1994 on Sub Pop Records. Once Diary was released, it was not long before Sunny Day Real Estate was a house-hold name. A tremendous album, Diary is often times considered to be the blueprint of the second wave of emo. Possessing eleven tracks of sheer beauty with delicate power, Diary became a big hit on college radio and elevated the band to heroic status in the underground music scene.

Unfortunately, the band was already suffering from internal strife. and shortly after coming home from their 1994 tour to work on their sophomore album, the band called it quits in early 1995. November of 1995 LP2, or The Pink Album as it is often referred to, was released posthumously. LP2 continued where Diary left off, with two of the tracks, 8 and Friday being re-recorded for this album after having previously appeared on past 7" singles. The closer, Rodeo Jones, was recorded during the Diary sessions and became a staple of their live shows.

Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith left to join Dave Grohl of Nirvana fame in the Foo Fighters, while Jeremy Enigk released a solo album entitled Return of the Frog Queen.

Sunny Day Real Estate reunited in 1997 with 3/4 of the original line-up, minus Nate Mendel. Two albums were recorded with this line-up, How It Feels to Be Something On in 1998, and The Rising Tide in 2000. Both were good albums, but lacked the same power and signature songs from the first two albums. SDRE once again disbanded, this time in 2001.

Enigk and Goldsmith rejoined Nate Mendel for The Fire Theft project later in 2001 and released a self-titled album in 2003. Once again, 3/4 of the original line-up of Sunny Day Real Estate did not possess the same magic, and although no official announcement was ever made that the band had dissolved, they have remained in hiatus since their tour supporting the debut.

Fans wanted all four back together, with plenty of fan sites on the internet dedicated to convincing SDRE to reunite in its complete form. Their wishes were finally answered in 2009, and Sunny Day Real Estate has a full tour planned for the fall of 2009!

This should be an amazing tour, as the band plays to focus on material from the first two albums when all four members were together. To further commemorate the tour, Diary and LP2 will be reissued with extra tracks just days before the tour starts in September.

Don't miss this tour! TickCo has your seats reserved for you, so make those plans today to be in the audience when Sunny Day Real Estate make their triumphant return to the stage. Enjoy the show!
