Prince Rogers Nelson began creating music with a band by the name of Grand Central while still in high school. This early work eventually led to Prince signing with Warner Brothers in 1976, the one label courting him that allowed him creative control of his music. His first album, For You, was released in 1978, and set a trend that would be the case for the majority of his work. Prince not only composed, arranged and sang his songs, he generally played all the instruments on his records. Supposedly Prince played all 27 instruments used in creating his very first album!
The music Prince creates has influences from several different genres, including funk, soul, R&B and rock and roll. Such diverse music allowed him to crossover to several different types of audiences.
Prince broke into the mainstream in 1982 with his fifth album 1999, which peaked at Number Nine on the Billboard Hot 200 and spawned two Top Ten U.S. singles. Two years later Prince became a bonafide superstar with the release of the soundtrack to the movie Purple Rain. Considered by several critics and music magazines as one of the top albums of all time, Purple Rain spent an incredible 24 consecutive weeks at Number One, has sold over 13 million copies in the U.S. alone and saw five of its nine tracks chart in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, four of those in the Top Ten and two singles, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy topping the chart. Incredibly, at one point Prince owned the Number One album, single and movie at the same time!
Twenty-five years after that period Prince continues to push the envelope, never releasing music simply for the sake of providing material for the masses. He has always been a true artist, and his resume of several Grammy Awards, one Academy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 speaks volumes of his impressive credibility.
Whether playing at the First Avenue in Minneapolis or stadiums around the world, a Prince concert is a special event. Make your plans today to see Prince live when he makes his way to your hometown!
