Pixies Artist Information
It is amazing how some bands enjoy moderate success when they are active, then become fan and media darlings after breaking up! Such is the case with the Pixies.
Guitarist and lead singer Charles Thompson and guitarist Joey Santiago were attending school together at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The two shared a liking of the music of David Bowie as well as punk rock. Inspired, the two decided to form a band in 1986. Kim Deal was added on bass, and a short time later David Lovering joined the trio on the drums. Charles changed his stage name to Black Francis. The Pixies were born.
The band beagn to play shows in Boston and its surrounding area when producer Gary Smith saw the Pixies play. Immediately moved by what he heard, Smith rushed the Pixies into his studio. A demo that came to be known as The Purple Tape was created, primarily for the ears of those in the music industry. The Pixies received their big break when Ivo Watts-Russell of 4AD Records heard the demo and signed the band to his label.
The Pixies only released one E.P. and four studio albums during their career, which ended in 1993 due to to an overbearing amount of strife within the band, particularly between Francis and Deal. However, in a short amount of time the Pixies managed to create some truly innovative and incredible music. 1989's Doolittle became a massive college radio hit in the States, the band became huge overseas and fellow artists took notice, becoming fans with many of the bands looking to the Pixies for musical inspiration.
One such artist was Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who publicly in an interview with Rolling Stone gave the Pixies credit for inspiring Nirvana's biggest hit, Smells Like Teen Spirit. The music of the Pixies ushered in a new era of creativity, altering typical song structure into a style referred to as loud-QUIET-loud. This style became a huge inspiration in the alternative music world from the nineties to present day music.
The band was sorely missed upon their demise, and rumors were constant about the eventual return of the band. Eleven years after their break-up the Pixies made their triumphant return, one that included a legendary performance at the 2004 Coachella Festival.
It appeared in 2008 the reunion had finally worn thin for the band, but the 20th anniversary of the release of Doolittle brought about a new enthusiam from the Pixies. The band, following what has become a new tradition in live music, will be playing Doolittle in its entirety for their adoring fans. Pixies reunion shows have always been a tough ticket. This news will make finding tickets an even tougher proposition today.
