No Doubt came into being in 1986 out of the ashes of a three-piece band by the name of Apple Core. One of the members of that band was Gwen Stefani, a figure that would come to be the focal point of No Doubt, and years later an extremely successful solo artist.
With a sound heavily rooted in classic ska and possessing strong alternative pop overtones, No Doubt began unleashing its furious shows on the masses and developed a strong, loyal following. Whether performing at clubs in California or venturing to classic underground venues such as Club Congress in Tucson, AZ, No Doubt knew how to entertain a crowd.
After signing with Interscope Records, the band released its self-titled debut in 1992. Caught in an era when grunge was king, the album failed to generate much attention. Undaunted, the band released their sophomore effort The Beacon Street Collection in March 1995, and did so independently since their label was losing faith in them. That album did well enough for Interscope to agree to finance their third disc. A good thing they did!
Tragic Kingdom was released in October 1995 and absolutely blew up, becoming a sensational hit for the band and catapaulting them into super-stardom. The disc was the first primarily written by Gwen Stefani and marked a considerable change in musical direction. Some long-time fans cried sell-out. Well, the disc and subsequent tour did!
The album topped the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart and reached Number One in three other countries as well. The lead single Just a Girl was the first big introduction the mainsteam had to No Doubt, and the single eventually peaked at Number 23 on the U.S. Singles Chart. Don't Speak was the track that became the band's centerpiece. The story goes that the track either talks about her break-up with bass player Tony Kanal, or is about a 1997 photo-shoot with Spin magazine where the band was asked to appear on the cover, then only Stefani being asked to appear in the shoot. The song was never officially released, but the popularity of the track led to it peaking at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay Chart, staying there an astonishing 16 weeks!
The band has only released two albums since Tragic Kingdom and have been out of the public eye for years. Their return in 2009 to the road precludes the release of their latest material, due to drop in 2010. Get a glimpse today of what No Doubt will soon be offering on disc to their fans.
