At the ripe young age of 11 Lil Wayne met Bryan Williams, a rapper and owner of Cash Money Records. Lil Wayne began his career by recording freestyle raps on Williams' answering machine, and Williams would eventually tutor him in the art of rap music.
In 1997 Lil Wayne put together a rap outfit by the name of the Hot Boy$. The group did well, reaching the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop album charts with their debut Guerilla Warfare and reaching Number Five on the Billboard Album Chart. Two years later Lil Wayne released his solo debut Tha Block is Hot. The disc was huge, reaching Number Three on the Billboard Album Charts and going double platinum.
The next two discs released by Lil Wayne did not have the same impact on the charts or with music critics, but the release of Tha Carter in 2004 put Lil Wayne on the road to superstardom. Since the release of Tha Carter all of his albums have charted in the Top Five of the Billboard Album Chart, and he has hit the top spot twice, once for the 2008 album Tha Carter III and once for the 2008 single Lollipop.
Lil Wayne has become a big star and has crossed over to several genres of music, even appearing with rap/rock/country star Kid Rock at the 2008 Country Music Awards, becoming the first hip-hop artist to ever appear on the awards show.
