Leonard Cohen was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1934, and as a teenager developed a love of poetry and learned to play the guitar. Poetry and writing were the two art forms he pursued initially, publishing his first book of poetry in 1956 and his first novel in 1963.
It was in 1967 when Leonard Cohen moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in folk music, and that year he released his debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen. At the time of its release the disc was deemed to be too full of dark content to find any commercial success, but it did find an audience with the folk rock crowd.
Through 1987 Leonard Cohen released nine more albums, which included proper studio, live and compilation discs. His success was modest at best, with three of the albums climbing into the Top Ten in the U.K. His U.S. success was minimal and the support he received from his record label was virtually non-existent.
1988 was the comeback year Leonard Cohen needed. I'm Your Man was released, marking a change in Leonard Cohen's sound as he incorporated more of a synthpop sound in his music. The lyrics became even darker and were full of social commentary. The new formula worked, as the album rose to Number Six in Sweden and topped the album chart in Norway.
The nineties saw Leonard Cohen being introduced to a younger generation of fans, as Everybody Knows, a phenomenal single from I'm Your Man, was featured in the 1990 movie Pump Up the Volume. In 1992 The Future was released, and even though the album was not commercially successful, the disc is considered to be one of his more accessible ones. Three tracks from that album, Waiting for the Miracle, The Future and Anthem, were featured in the 1994 flick Natural Born Killers.
Leonard Cohen quietly continued to write and create more music, maintaining a solid fan base throughout the years. His longevity in the industry and influence he has on several artists helped contribute to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. That same year he performed on the Pyramid Stage at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in Pilton, England. The performance was regarded as one the highlights of the event.
