Green Day Artist Information
Punk rock hit the mainstream in the mid-nineties. This may not have not pleased some old-school punk rock fans, but the general masses loved the high-octane energy of the music. One band to really capitalize on the acceptance of punk rock was Green Day, and to their credit have continued to progess and expand their horizons since their initial breakthrough.
Formed in 1987, Green Day first developed its sound and reputation at Berkeley's hallowed ground for punk rock music, 924 Gilman Street. Releasing two popular underground albums on Lookout! Records, the band generated enough publicity with their second disc Kerplunk that it was not long before major labels came calling. Some long-time fans cried sell-out, but the move was the right one for Green Day.
Dookie was recorded in a mere three weeks and was released in 1994. The lead single from the album Longview became a huge MTV hit and catapaulted Green Day into the public eye. With three singles from the disc topping Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, a legendary performance at Woodstock 94 slinging mud at the audience, and a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, Green Day were now full-fledged superstars.
Three more albums were released between 1995-2000, all doing well on the charts, but without the significant impact Dookie had. Then Green Day released American Idiot in 2004 and their popularity exploded. The album debuted at Number One on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart, their only album so far to top the charts. The album's influence stretched into 2006, with Green Day winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005 and taking home another in 2006 for Record of the Year with the single Boulevard of Broken Dreams. All from a band that used to play to small crowds with kids slam-dancing to songs like Welcome to Paradise!
