Dead Artist Information
Once the thirty year career of the Grateful Dead ended with passing of singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia, fellow Dead members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann formed a new band by the name of The Other Ones. That name lasted until 2003, when the name was changed to its current moniker, The Dead. "Grateful" had been dropped from the original name out of respect for Garcia, and also as a tribute to their long-time audience, as The Dead was how the band was often referred to by their fans.
The Grateful Dead had amassed perhaps the most rabid and loyal following of any band in history. "Deadheads" flocked to the concerts, and the band consistently treated their fans to a stellar show everytime they played. The Grateful Dead had a reputation for not having a set show to perform. Rather, each night the members pulled from their expansive catalog of tunes and basically created the show on the spot.
Other than Jerry Garcia being conspicuously absent from today's line-up, nothing much has changed with The Dead. They have added a couple of members during their tours in Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti to bolster the sound, but other than that The Dead still deliver basically the same package as they did during the 30 year career of the Grateful Dead.
After playing two shows in 2008 during Barack Obama's election run, The Dead performed at one of the ten official balls held during President Obama's inauguration. This performance precluded their latest tour, which once again gives Deadheads everywhere a chance to gather and groove to the smooth rock and roll of The Dead.
