Popular Southern rock band the Allman Brothers experienced a revival in 1989. When they decided to go on tour for the first time in many years, guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody were added to the line-up. Sharing a love for classic sixties rock trios, the two teamed up with drummer Matt Abts during breaks from activities with the Allman Brothers to form Government Mule.
The trio released their self-titled debut in 1995 and a live album entitled Live From Roseland Ballroom the following year. Fans enjoyed Gov't Mule's blend of Southern and jam rock, and the band continued to play as an Allman Brothers side project until 1997, when Haynes and Woody left that band to concentrate their energies full-time on Govt Mule.
Another studio and live album had already been released when Government Mule delivered Life Before Insanity in 2000. Critics loved the album and fame loomed on the horizon when tragedy struck. Allen Woody was found dead in New York City August of that year.
Haynes and Abts considered breaking up the band at that point, but fortunately for the music community they have forged on and continue to release quality material and deliver impressive live shows whenever they perform.
Lock up the sweet seats in the venue they perform at in your town and get set for an evening of jam rock at its best with Gov't Mule. Enjoy the show!
