Benjamin Gibbard was the guitar player for a band by the name of Pinwheel when he released a solo cassette in 1997 entitled You Can Play These Songs With Chords. The release was a surprise success, and consequently Gibbard decided to put together a full band for the project. Death Cab for Cutie was born.
The band released a total of four albums on indie label Barsuk Records, with their fourth album, the 2003 release of Transatlanticism, a watershed for the band. Death Cab for Cutie had been crafting a smooth, almost emo-driven brand of indie-pop since Gibbard's first release, and Transatlanticism was the culmination of the years of hard work. A beautiful album, Transatlanticism featured songs such as The New World. Fans and critics were hooked, and major label Atlantic Records came calling.
Armed with a bigger distribution, Death Cab for Cutie became huge in the alternative music community. Their first release for Atlantic, Plans, peaked at Number Four on the Billboard Album Chart, and three years later in 2008 Narrow Stairs topped the chart, Death Cab for Cutie's first number one album. Without catering to the masses and changing their formula, Death cab for Cutie had become a household name.
