CAKE began its career in 1991. Led by vocalist and songwriter John McCrea, the band began crafting music that drew from a variety of genres. This is a band that at one moment can play some good old fashioned rock and roll, then dabble in a bit of country, launch into some funk and rap, all the while mixing in a taste of ska and jazz. The formula works well in this case, as Cake is loaded with superb musicianship.
The band struck paydirt in 1996 with the release of their second album Fashion Nugget. The Distance was the first single released and peaked at Number Four on the U.S. Modern Rock chart.
The band continued its assault on the Modern Rock charts, with multiple singles landing in the Top Five and Never There hitting the top spot. Multiple albums from CAKE have landed in the U.S. Top 40. All of this has been done without the band ever selling out and trying to cater to the mainstream. They have a serious agenda and stick to their indie ideals.
As good as Cake is on record, this is simply one of those bands you HAVE to see live to fully appreciate.
