Boyz II Men Artist Information
Soul and R&B got a serious shot in the arm when Boyz II Men came into being in 1988. TickCo has your tickets to see the boys from Philly deliver their smooth sounds to a venue near you!
Originally a quintet, Boyz II Men managed to sneak backstage after a 1989 Bell Biv Devoe show and delivered an a cappella version of a New Edition tune to current BBD and former New Edition member Michael Bivins. Bivins was impressed enough to help the up-and-coming quartet land a deal with Motown Records.
Two years later Boyz II Men's debut album Cooleyhighharmony was released. Combining many of the characteristics of hip-hop with the grace of classic soul, Boyz II Men helped popularize a new genre of music referred to as new jack swing. They did so in a unique manner, avoiding the typical R&B formula in reference to multiple singers. All four members of Boyz II Men sang lead vocals, with each member handing the duties off to a bandmate during the course of a tune.
Fans loved it and the album peaked at Number Three, selling over nine million copies in the process and winning the 1992 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Already a big time act, Boyz II Men shot to superstardom with their contribution to the Boomerang movie soundtrack in 1992. End of the Road was a worldwide smash, spending 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, breaking the record that had been held by Elvis Presley since 1956. The song was so popular that Cooleyhighharmony was re-issued to include the single.
All this had been accomplished before their sophomore release II was released in 1994. Boyz II Men picked up right where they left off, as the album debuted at Number One on the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart, spent five weeks at Number One and sold over 12 million copies in the U.S. Two singles topped the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, with I'll Make Love to You setting a new record for weeks at Number One with 14, and the second single from the album, On Bended Knee, replacing I'll Make Love to You at Number One, making Boyz II Men only the third artist in popular music history to achieve that feat.
Boyz II Men have not able to maintain that type of phenomenal momentum since then, but that early run made them one of the most successful acts in Motown history. Down to a trio now, Boyz II Men can still croon with the best of them. This remains an act capable of delivering a set full of stellar vocal harmonizing, making Boyz II Men still an enduring crowd-pleaser. Make plans today to see these Philly Boyz live in concert with your purchase of tickets from TickCo.
Enjoy the show!
