The post-punk revival of the new millenium received a huge shot in the arm when the Bloc Party first began to take shape at the legendary Reading Festival in the U.K. back in 1999. TickCo has your tickets to see live one of the rising stars of alternative music!
Lead singer/rhythm guitarist Kele Okereke and lead guitarist Russell Lissack had originally met in 1998 before seeing each other once again the next year at the Reading Festival. Deciding to form a band, the two auditioned several rhythm musicians before bringing in bass player Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong. The band worked on their music and went through several name changes before settling on the Bloc Party in 2003.
During this year the band handed a copy of their first single She's Hearing Voices to Franz Ferdinand lead singer Alex Kapranos and Radio One DJ Steve Lamasq. The single was played on Lamasq's show and he invited them on to the show to play the song live. The buzz generated from that single led the Bloc Party to signing with Wichita Recordings and releasing their debut album Silent Alarm in 2005.
What an amazing slab of vinyl! A throwback to the brutal post-punk of bands such as Gang of Four and featuring guitar work reminiscient of U.K. legends The Jam, the Bloc Party had created a disc full of intensity, powerful guitar work and the inspiring vocal delivery of Okereke. The energy was complemented with pop-hooks galore, and fans of that style of eighties music were immediate fans of the Bloc Party. The band may have been influenced by that genre of music, but created a style that was totally their own.
The release of two more great albums since has solidified the Bloc Party as a force in current alternative music, and the band builds on their reputation with one of the most energetic live shows in music today. Their style has evolved on each album, but the unique guitar work remains firmly in place.
