There are many stories and legends in regards to this franchise. One of the most compelling involved captain at the time and NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier. The Rangers were down 2-3 to their conference rivals, the New Jersey Devils, in the conference finals, and on the road. Mark Messier boldly guaranteed victory, stating "we know we are going to win Game Six and bring it back to the Garden". The Rangers trailed 0-2 midway through that game, until Messier scored his first point of the game on an assist to one of his teammates. Not done, Mark Messier scored a hat trick in the the third period to force a Game 7, which the Rangers won. The team next beat the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to capture their fourth Stanley Cup.
