When nine talented MCs from Staten Island got together in 1993, they were destined for stardom. Dr. Dre was dominating the hip hop industry, but Wu-Tang Clan made a name for themselves, emerging as one of the most influential rap groups in the 90's.
As their name suggests, the group of family and friends not only share a love rhymes and beats, but Chinese mythology. In 1992, Wu-Tang released their first single Protect Ya Neck and sold it to local record stores. The success led to a record deal and the 1993 album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The album contained martial-arts themes, street terminology and personal subject matters. The unique beats and lyrics made it an instant hit among fans. With songs like Method Man, Can It Be All So Simple, Da Mystery of Chessboxin' and of course C.R.E.A.M, Wu-Tang Clan had hit the mainstream. Thanks to the record, many of the members also emerged with successful solo careers.
In 1997, Wu-Tang released their second album Wu-Tang Forever which entered the charts at No. 1, selling over 600,000 copies in its first week. For the next few years, they group toured together, but continued to build on their individual careers. In 2004, tragedy hit with the death of original member Ol' Dirty Bastard, but the group forged forward. RZA released The Wu-Tang Manual which included biographies of each member and explanations of the infamous Wu-Tang logo and group influencenes. More recently, Wu-Tang released 8 Diagrams, the group's sixth album.
