Wilco formed out of the ashes of the highly influential alt country band Uncle Tupelo in 1994. Jay Farrar, lead singer of Uncle Tupelo, left the band, but the remaining members stayed together and continued to record. The alt country sound was still evident in their recordings, but as time wore on more experimental aspects were added to the music.
Wilco has maintained its indie roots throughout and influenced a number of artists during its career such as The National and Pete Yorn. The media embraced the band as well. Wilco has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards and to date has won twice, both in 2005 for their album A Ghost Is Born.
