Wayne Newton Artist Information
Not many entertainers are more famous for their celebrity status than Wayne Newton. Born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1942, Newton started performing at age 5, learning to play piano and guitar. By 6 he was performing on radio, hosting a television show by 12 and a regular on the Las Vegas circuit in his teens.
Newton has been a Sin City mainstay since the 60's when he and his brother Jerry moved there to perform and record for Capitol and George Records. When Jerry left the act in 1963, Newton stayed to work on a solo career with Capitol. The result was three hit singles, including his staple Danke Schoen which was released when Wayne was just 21.
In the 70's, Newton recorded under the new label Chelsea, giving him one of the biggest hits of his career Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast. This was also around the time Wayne decided to spend more time focusing on his Vegas career. By the 1980's, Wayne Newton was the undisputed King of Vegas— he won the Entertainer of the Year award more than any other artist, set a record as the highest-paid nightclub performer and bought the Aladdin Casino.
