Rick Springfield first burst into prominence by means of the teen heartthrob scene, but limited success in the seventies caused him to pursue a career in acting. Scattered roles in movies and televison series led him to landing the role of Dr. Noah Drake on the soap opera General Hospital. He took the role after having already recorded his fourth album as insurance in case the album fared poorly.
That album was released in 1981. Working Class Dog was full of pop rock tunes and the single Jessie's Girl became an enormous hit, topping the U.S. singles chart. Jessie's Girl is one of those songs that has an incredible hook and as a result is one of those singles synonymous with the 80's. The song remains one of the highlights of a Rick Springfield set.
From 1981-1984 Rick Springfield dominated the charts with his infectious pop rock, with twelve straight singles charting in the Top 40 on the U.S. singles chart and five making the Top Ten. He starred in a movie called Hard to Hold, a box office failure but the soundtrack did very well on the charts.
After releasing his eighth album in 1985 Rick Springfield made a decision to back off from music for a while. Although once he came back to the arena he was not the force he was previously, he has continued to make music and even returned to General Hospital in 2005, reprising the role he made famous 23 years earlier. His shows are just as much fun today as they were in his prime. The hooks in that early material still shine through.
