Part of the wave of punk rock bands that hit the mainstream in the early nineties, The Offspring were one of the few bands from that era to maintain much of their early sound and avoid the "sell-out" tag that plagued other punk bands popular at the same time. The Offspring have hit the road once again, and TickCo has your tickets to see The Offspring live!
The Offspring are the brainchild of Bryan Keith Holland, better known by his stage name of Dexter Holland. Taking cues from some of the best old school Southern California punk bands, such as The Adolescents and D.I., The Offspring eventually landed a recording deal with Epitaph Records. Epitaph was run by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz, and with that type of punk experience backing them the band released their second album Ignition in 1992. A moderate success, The Offspring toured relentlessly in support of the disc before returning to the studio. What a third effort the band released next!
Smash is one of the defining records of the nineties wave of punk rock, and was a leading contributor to punk becoming a mainstream genre of music. It ranks as the Number One punk rock and independently released album of all time, selling over 16 million units world-wide and going platinum six times over in the U.S. The band accomplished this while sticking to their original formula of music, high-energy punk rock with a definite pop edge to it. It was easy to hear hints of D.I. and Mommy's Little Monster era Social Distortion in The Offspring. The band simply exploded with this release.
The Offspring have continued their solid career since that release, selling millions of albums over their next five releases. The band became so successful that Dexter Holland put aside his work on a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. Who said that punk rockers had no intelligence?!
