One of the forerunners of the Britpop movement that exploded in the early nineties, Oasis is a huge force in the music world, as much for the antics of the only continuous members of the band, the Gallagher brothers, as for the melodic music they create. Oasis formed out of the ashes of a band by the name of The Rain. When Liam Gallagher was recruited to take over lead vocals, he suggested the name of the band be changed to Oasis. The name was inspired by a venue that popular British indie-rock band Inspiral Carpets has performed at, a band Liam's brother Noel was a roadie for at the time. Noel joined the band as lead guitarist and principal songwriter.
In 1993 Oasis was signed to Creation Records, a label of high prominence in the U.K. with such acts as the Jesus and Mary Chain, Swervedriver, Ride, Adorable and My Bloody Valentine. Oasis had already developed their trademark guitar-heavy Britpop style, but now with a big-time label behind them, they unleashed their debut album Definitely Maybe on the masses in 1994. The disc entered the U.K. charts at Number One and spawned the incredibly melodic single Live Forever.
Their sophomore effort (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, released in 1995, made Oasis one of the biggest acts in the world. The album reached the top of the charts in the U.K. and Australia and peaked at Number Four in the U.S. The disc remains the third biggest selling album of all-time in the U.K. The single Wonderwall peaked at Number Two on the U.K. singles chart and Number Eight in the U.S., while the anthemic Champagne Supernova topped the U.S. Modern Rock charts. Oasis were superstars.
The momentum Oasis built with their first two records diminished as time went on, but the release of their sixth disc Don't Believe the Truth in 2005 marked a resurgence in popularity that Oasis continues to build upon.
