The legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrsion, CO, is the setting for one of the coolest music festivals around, the Monolith Music Festival!
2007 was the inaugural Monolith Festival. A phenomenal line-up with some well-known indie-rock heavyweights were present, as well as a plethora of lesser known acts chomping at the bit for an opportunity to play for a large number of festival attendees. The mix was superb and the two day festival was a resounding success. The opportunity to see up and comers such as the ultra-hip Ghostland Observatory, the socially conscious and superb Cloud Cult, the indie-pop and electronica stylings of the Mobius Band and Ra Ra Riot, a band mixing guitars, a violin and a cello to create a totally unique sound, made for a fabulous weekend.
Of course, a big festival has to have some well-known artists as well, and Monolith did a wonderful job bringing in some classic alternative acts. Editors out of England played a phenomenal set and may have been the highlight of the weekend from a strict musical perspective. CAKE was its normal charming self, providing the crowd with its eclectic mix of rock, folk and country, complete with one of the most talented frontmen in rock and roll, John McCrea. The weekend was brought to a close with one of the greatest live acts in music today, the Flaming Lips, complete with Wayne Coyne's legendary Space Bubble, the onstage dancers of aliens and people in Santa Claus suits, and the band's thought provoking music.
The second festival in 2008 may have been even better, and featured a more diverse and independent roster of artists than the previous year. Attendees were treated to the brutal sonic assault of A Place to Bury Strangers, the retro-soul of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the joyful Britpop of the Fratellis, the complex indie-pop of Jukebox the Ghost, the punk inspired indie-pop of Tokyo Police Club, the intense delivery of Snowden, the shoegaze inspired indie-rock of the Silversun Pickups, the intelligent and frenetic delivery of TV on the Radio, the energetic dance mix of Cut Copy, and possibly the highlight of the weekend, the overwhelming indie-flavored Southern rock of Band of Horses.
A great festival needs a great location, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre may very well be the ultimate in what is a perfect venue. The manner in which the venue sits nestled into the rocks provides the listener with fabulous acoustics. A music fan sitting at Red Rocks will not only be blown away by the crystal clear sound but by the absolute beauty of the surroundings. This venue is a music fan's paradise!
Scattered around the venue are four additional stages, plenty of vendor booths and a nice mix of different kinds of food. Two of the stages are located inside the Red Rocks Visitor Center. The center is a must visit while at the Monolith Festival to see some of the history of this classic venue.
