Henry Rollins Artist Information
Spoken word in a unique art form where the performer delivers poetry and even lyrics to the audience, but does so in a speaking style rather than singing. Henry Rollins has taken this art form to dizzying and intense heights. TickCo has your tickets to see Henry Rollins when he performs in your town!
Henry Garfield grew up in Washington, D.C., and along with his pals, notably Ian MacKaye of Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Egg Hunt, Embrace and Fugazi fame, became an integral part of the hardcore punk D.C. scene of the late seventies and early eighties. Garfield became the lead singer of State of Alert and the band put out one E.P. entitled No Policy.
Garfield was a big fan of legendary Los Angeles punk band Black Flag, and after jumping onstage to sing Clocked In with the band during a show in New York, he was invited to join the band for good as their vocalist. He packed his things, moved to L.A and changed his last name to Rollins, just in time to be a part of one of the most intense punk rock records ever produced, the explosive Damaged LP. The band continued for five more tumultuous years before guitarist and founding member Greg Ginn pulled the plug.
Henry Rollins had already started experimenting with spoken word before the break-up of the Flag. He formed a new band, the Rollins Band, continued to make thought-provoking and intense music and began to perfect his craft in the spoken word arena.
A Rollins spoken word show is an experience like no other. Always a caged animal when singing onstage, he took that fury and some significant events in his life and focused it inward. He developed a performance where one moment he will have the audience laughing hysterically about his experiences back in D.C. as manager of an ice cream store, then moments later in a fit of rage about the current state of the world. Henry Rollins forces you to think and although he is the one onstage speaking, the members of the audience for a couple of hours become a part of his world and are led to a state of pure introspection.
