Born in 1947 as Reginald Kenneth Dwight, the son of a RAF (Royal Air Force) trumpeter, Dwight began playing piano when he was only four years old. He won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of eleven, and after spending only six years studying, he decided to break into "the business."

His first band was Bluesology and they enjoyed the success of backing touring American soul and R&B musicians. That came to an end in 1966 when Dwight left the band, but not without taking his new name from Elton Dean and John Baldry.

It was in 1966 that Elton first got hold of a stack of Bernie Taupin's lyrics after a failed audition for Liberty Records. These two blazed through songs during a two year period writing for DJM artists; Taupin writing lyrics at the rate of one song per hour and Elton writing the music twice as fast. The two would collaborate on songs throughout most of the next decade and Bernie would prove to be the lyrical genius behind the majority of Elton's numerous chart toppers.

In 1968 Elton released his first solo songs and in 1969 his debut album followed with fair reviews and a lack of sales. It wasn't until he began touring the US in 1970 that he began to gain some recognition. Your Song reached the Top Ten Charts in the autumn of 1970 and was quickly followed by his Tumbleweed Connection album in early '71. 1972's Honky Chateau finally saw Elton's breakthrough as a star. 1972 to 1976 saw a four year streak of sixteen Top 20 hits in a row.

Elton John took some well-deserved time off after 1977. Since then he has established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, been Knighted, befriended princesses and was the last artist to play live with John Lennon. Candle in the Wind, a rewritten tribute for Princess Diana is still the fastest selling hit of all time. He's been hugely successful with his music for Disney's The Lion King and Broadway's Aida. His 2004 Peachtree Road album marked Elton's full return as a successful solo recording artist and there's no sign of him slowing down anytime soon.
