Elbow Artist Information
Some areas of the world, for whatever reason, just seem to possess a magic for cultivating fabulous music. Manchester in the U.K. is a shining example, with important artists in music history such as Joy Division, New Order, the Smiths, Oasis, the Stone Roses and the Chameleons all coming from that area.
Elbow follows in that tradition and has done so in a very unique and compelling way, creating music that is absolutely brilliant. The band plays a form of Britpop and Dreampop that does not stick to the classic formulas of either genre. Rather, Elbow draws you in with a quiet, almost serene manner of musicianship. Their music is described by one fan as being "subtle", and that may be just about the perfect description.
Many bands have to play loud and fast to blow the listener away. Elbow create the same effect without having to overwhelm the listener with volume. Instead, they craft wonderful pop songs with introspective lyrics, superior play and some of the best vocals around, courtesy of Guy Garvey. You listen to Elbow and realize soon thereafter you are listening to music the way it should be created, as a pure medium of expression that initially dulls your senses until you are focused in on just the music. Once you reach that point of focus, you cannot help but be blown away. Elbow creates music that puts the listener in a state of euphoria.
The music translates very well to the stage and Elbow has developed a reputation for astonishing live shows. Their play live is superb, the vocals are just as good live as on disc, a characteristic that is unfortunately rare with most bands, and frontman Guy Garvey has a unique wit and rapport with his audience. Their live rendering of their hit single Newborn from their first disc Asleep in the Back is so powerful, yet so quiet and beautiful, it will move an audience to tears. They are that good in concert.
Music critics finally began to realize what an amazing band Elbow is when the band was awarded the coveted Mercury Prize for Best Album in 2008 for their fourth disc, The Seldom Seen Kid.
