A band does not necessarily need to have a plethora of hit albums and singles in their collection to achieve legendary status. Some bands, for whatever reason, are not considered mainstream, but have a tremendous impact on music. Cheap Trick is a great example of this!
Cheap Trick is what power pop should be: solid guitar work; stunning vocals; hooks galore in the songs. Cheap Trick released their first album in 1977 after touring for years. American audiences took their time warming up to the band, but massive popularity in Japan saw the release of At Budokan in 1979 and Cheap Trick finally began to get its due. The band has existed for well over thirty years now and the majority of the time had 3/4 of the original line-up intact, with the lone original member leaving the band in 1981 and returning in 1987.
The impact of the band can be summed up from a great sequence in the classic Eighties flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High when Damone is trying to sell concert tickets to a potential client. When the girl he is trying to sell to starts to hem and haw, he says, "Well, what about the tunes?", and launches into an impromptu version of Surrender, a classic Cheap Trick tune!
2009 will see the return to the road for this classic band. Be sure to check the local listings in your area, for on many of the dates Cheap Trick will be joined by fellow eighties rockers Def Leppard and Poison!
Cheap Trick fans will have an even bigger reason to celebrate in 2009, as Cheap Trick recently landed a Las Vegas residency, The group will be performing the Beatles classic album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at the Las Vegas Hilton in September, accompanied by a full orchestra.
