Andre Rieu began studying the violin in 1954 at the age of five. He has studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Liege, the Conservatorium Maastricht and the Music Academy in Brussels.
Andre Rieu developed a fascination with the waltz form and that led him to form the Johann Strauss Orchestra in 1987. He has been fascinating audiences with his unique presentation of the waltz since then.
Andre Rieu has been criticized by some purists for his on-stage theatrics. However, the fact cannot be denied that his presentation of the waltz in the form he does has made the music very accessible to the masses and the popularity of his shows are a shining testament to that.
His shows are a glorious affair, with up to fifty members now playing in his orchestra. The music varies from classic waltz to popular favorites done in a symphonic style. The proof of the joy his audiences feel when he performs is seeing couples down on the floor of any arena he performs in doing the waltz while his orchestra plays!
