A Fan's Guide to the Game
With a healthy budget a healthy lineup and a new playing surface designed to keep that lineup healthy, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking to make their mark on the tough AL East. If you're headed out to catch a Blue Jays game at the Rogers Centre, you'll want to catch our "Fan's Guide to the Game" below.
Opened in 1989 the recently renamed Rogers Centre features a retractable dome roof and a new playing surface called "FieldTurf," since the 2007 season. The new surface promises to act more like a natural playing surface than the old "AstroTurf" which was harder and may have had an impact on the health of players in previous seasons.
For the record. The Rogers Centre has the highest apex of the Major League's domed stadiums at 310 feet. It also boasts the worlds largest Jumbotron scoreboard which measures 33 feet high and 115 feet wide.
Hungry? Grab some eats in the 650 seat restaurant above the center field fence or spend Happy-Hour at the 300-foot long Hard Rock Cafe bar above.
Parking? Why drive? Stay in one of the 348 rooms at the Renaissance Toronto Hotel in center field. 70 of those rooms include a view of the game, so you might not even have to leave your room to see the Jays in action. Just don't do anything you don't want 50,000 plus Toronto fans to witness while inside. Believe me, it's happened. And how's this for a commute? Roberto Alomar actually lived at the ballpark when he played for the Jays. "Party at Robbie's after the game" must have been uttered on more than one occasion.
Blue Jays management decides if the dome stays opened or not during the regular-season. Generally it's only closed for a handful of games each season. During postseason play the American League dictates the roof to be closed for all games. This might be due to the tendency of a downdraft in the outfield while the roof is open, which tends to prevent many home runs being hit versus when the roof is closed.
One thing's for certain, the Blue Jays will always need more than a state of the art facility and a softer playing surface to compete with franchises such as Boston and New York. They'll need fans, die-hard fans and a reason to win, so grab some hopeful cohorts, get out to the game and root on some new faces to the AL Pennant race this season! |
