Yes Artist Information
Since forming in London in 1968, the progressive rock band Yes has separated itself from other groups in their genre. With distinctive, harmonious vocalists, extended guitar solos, abstract lyrics, and instrumental expertise, Yes remains as popular as ever.
Yes had their big breaks at the Speakeasy Club in London filling in for Sly & the Family Stone, and as opening acts for Cream and Janis Joplin. Their first two albums — heavy in cover material— found moderate success, but it was their 1971 The Yes Album that attracted the public's attention. It contained mostly original work including Your Move which was the first song to appear on the U.S. charts and eventual smash hits I've Seen All Good People and Starship Trooper. The success of that album led to their first U.S. tour opening for Jethro Tull. Album number four, Fragile, was released a year later with tremendous critical acclaim, hitting the Top Ten and containing the ever popular singles Roundabout, America and South Side of the Sky.
The same year, the group released Close to the Edge which was more of a symphony style album and became a high point in the progressive rock genre. A three-disc live album, Yessongs followed, along with their spiritual studio album Tales From Topographic Oceans in 1973. At the end of the Topographic Oceans tour, Yes took a hiatus from performing and recording. In the 1984, Yes stormed back with the hit single Owner of a Lonely Heart off the best-selling album 90125.
