Van Morrison Artist Information
Van Morrison is considered one of the most important musicians of our time. His albums are ranked among the greatest in rock and roll, has over 150 songs featured in major motion pictures, makes VH1's list of the Top 50 Musicians of All Time and is a Grammy-award winning singer, songwriter, author, poet and multi-instrumentalist.
Growing up in Belfast, Ireland, Morrison was influenced by his father's record collections which included blues and jazz legends Leadbelly, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Boy Williamson. At age 13, Morrison was already skilled with the guitar, saxophone, harmonica and was playing with local bands. He started his solo career in the late 60s singling alongside Cuby and The Blizzards before going to New York in 1967. While in New York, he recorded four singles for producer Bert Berns, one of them being Brown Eyed Girl which hit #10 in the U.S.
The following year, Morrison got together with a group of jazz musicians to record Astral Weeks, a bluesy, improvised album that is ranked among the greatest of all time. His next project was Moondance which had a more upbeat, R&B sound. The title song and Come Running were the biggest hits, and resulted in Morrison's first album to appear in the Top 100. The same year he released His Band and the Street Choir which contained the popular singles Domino and Blue Money. For the next 25 years, Van Morrison's popularity continued to grow and he released dozens of charting albums. In 1993, he received ultimate praise with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
