Artistic and commercial success was his in the fifties and for the first half of the sixties, but by 1965 attention to music was paid more to rock and roll and not the traditional and pop genres of music Tony Bennett performed. His career started to decline and for two decades he was clearly out of the spotlight.
The turnaround began in the late eighties when his son and now manager began to book him on shows that catered to younger audiences, feeling if a new generation of fans simply had an opportunity to hear his father live, they would fall in love with him just as a generation before had. A dangerous move, but one that clearly worked. His appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1994 attracted wide fan and media attention and the resulting album went platinum and took home two Grammy Awards in 1995, including the top prize of Album of the Year.
