The Pretenders Artist Information
Regardless of the numerous line-ups the Pretenders have undergone over the years, lead singer and guitarist Chrissie Hynde is still the driving force behind this great band. Make sure to be in the crowd to see these rock legends live with your tickets from TickCo!
Chrissie Hynde, originally from Akron, OH, moved to the U.K. in 1973. The Pretenders were formed in 1978. Heavily influenced by early punk rock, but with definite pop overtones, the original line-up of Hynde, Pete Farndon on bass, James Honeyman-Scott on guitar and Martin Chambers on the drums created two straight discs of new wave influenced rock and roll that shook the music world.
With Chrissie Hynde at the forefront, the Pretenders quickly established themselves as a band ready to dominate the charts for years. The band was capable of playing smooth pop on tunes like the Ray Davies penned Stop Your Sobbing and Talk of the Town, then moments later absolutely shredding on classics such as Message of Love and Precious. This band was unbelievable. Then tragedy struck ...
Both Farndon and Honeyman-Scott died from drug overdoses within ten months of one another in 1982 and 83. Refusing to throw in the towel, Chrissie Hynde wrote Back on the Chain Gang two weeks after Honeyman-Scott died. A beautiful, but haunting tune, Back on the Chain Gang shot up to Number Five on the U.S. Singles Charts.
Chrissie Hynde has kept the Pretenders going into the band's third decade now and show no signs of slowing down. The Pretenders were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and released their ninth album Break Up The Concrete in 2008.
