Steely Dan began its illustrious career in 1971 around its two core members, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The two are prolific musicians and mix a wide variety of musical styles into their music, including jazz, rock and rhythm and blues. The duo has worked with a number of additional musicians throughout their career, including Michael McDonald, later of Doobie Brothers fame.
In 1975 the duo wanted to stick with recording their music and no longer wished to tour, a move which caused an obvious rift with the rest of their bandmates. Steely Dan continued this practice until they broke up in 1981.
Calls for a reunion were widespread, and in 1993 the duo began to play shows together again. They have continued to record and play together. Their track record includes multiple platinum selling albums, numerous singles to chart in the Top 100, with three of those making their way into the Top Ten, Grammy nominations and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
