REM Artist Information
The eighties was a unique decade of music and it can be argued that this is the era when college radio began to enter the mainstream. At the forefront of this assault was a band out of Athens, GA by the name of REM.
Success was never the primary goal of this band; instead, their goal was to create music that was different from what was popular at the time and promote thought within their fans due to the insightful lyrics. The band was signed to independent heavyweight I.R.S. Records and the result was of momentous proportions. Michael Stipe's barely comprehensible lyrics and Peter Buck's unique, jangly style of guitar work was reminiscient of power pop stars Big Star, and college radio listeners ate it up. Their I.R.S. years produced one EP and five unbelievable albums, which to this day are necessities for any music collection. Stardom was just around the corner.
Their second major label disc Out of Time rocketed REM into the stratosphere, debuting at Number One and actually returning to that coveted position later. The disc brought three Grammy Awards to the band and two Top Ten singles.
REM was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, but that did not put an end to their career. They continue to release new material and are still a force on the road. With such an expansive catalog to choose from, you can bet you will hear songs from the era after leaving I.R.S., such as Losing My Religion and Orange Crush, and if you are lucky, maybe the band will pull out some of their tunes that set the foundation for their success, such as Feeling Gravity's Pull, Radio Free Europe and Pretty Persuasion.
