Peter Murphy Artist Information
Peter Murphy is often times referred to as the "Godfather of Goth", a title justifiably earned. A booming, deep baritone voice, a flair for the dramatic onstage and the topics discussed in his lyrics back up that distinction very well.
Peter Murphy was the frontman for Bauhuas, a stunning and extremely influential goth rock band that existed from 1978-1983, then reunited in 1998 for a reunion tour. The band periodically for the next few years would reform and even released a disc of brand new material in 2008. However the band has emphatically stated that album would be the band's last.
When Bauhaus originally disbanded, Peter Murphy first tried a collaboration by the name of Dali's Car with Mick Karn from the band Japan. The project flopped and Peter Murphy began to record on his own. He released two solo discs between 1986-1989 that were moderate successes. Then came the album Deep in 1990.
Deep was an enormous hit and its single Cuts You Up stayed at the top of the U.S. Modern Rock charts for seven weeks. A gorgeous, rich sounding disc, Deep took the legend of Peter Murphy to a brand new level and exposed him to a fanbase he had not experienced before.
Peter Murphy has continued to release new material and tour in between the occasional Bauhaus reunions. This veteran knows how to put on a great show. You discover very quickly when you see Peter Murphy live that his unique vocal delivery is not dubbed in the studio, but is the real deal and sends chills down your spine when he launches into stirring versions of All Night Long, A Strange Kind of Love or Keep Me From Harm.
