Back in 1996 an indie-rock single by the name of Popular became a Modern Rock hit and a staple on MTV. The band's name was Nada Surf and at the time played a power pop style of music with a punk edge to it.
The band originally was formed in 1992 and four years later was enjoying the fruits of their labor. However, big-time fame can be short-lived, and when Nada Surf's record label at the time showed displeasure with their sophomore effort because they were looking for another single like Popular, the band was unceremoniously dropped. Some bands would wilt under that type of pressure, but Nada Surf has not only perservered but has produced some of the finest power pop of the past five-plus years.
The band toned down the punk edge, showed a more sensitive side and used that combination to create a brilliant style of indie rock, rich in hooks and featuring the guitar work and vocal stylings of Matthew Caws. The result has been some outstanding discs with each album chock full on tunes that stay in your head and are easy to sing along to.
The band shows versatile talent on stage, able to attack their up-tempo tunes with vigor and just as quickly play their mellow tunes in a delicate manner. Their shows are an enjoyable experience!
