Michael McDonald began his career in 1975 as a backing vocalist and occasional keyboardist with Steely Dan. He also was a member of their touring ensemble in the seventies. April of 1975 he was asked to join the Doobie Brothers on a temporary basis when their lead singer became ill while touring. This eventually became a permanent gig and some of the Doobie Brothers biggest hits were made once he joined the band.
After the Doobie Brothers first "farewell tour" in 1982, Michael McDonald struck out on his own. He immediately enjoyed success with his debut album If That's What It Takes peaking at Number Five on the U.S. album chart, and the single I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near) climbed to Number Four. He earned a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals for Yah Mo B There with James Ingram, and had a Number One single with Patti Labelle in 1986 with On My Own.
Michael McDonald has accomplished all this on the strength of a unique vocal style, a husky yet tenor style of singing. His fans love the rhythm and blues and soul music he creates.
