Melissa Etheridge began her career back in 1982 playing in small bars. She managed to attract the attention of label executives from A&M Records, who eventually hired her as a staff songwriter. After a spell writing songs for other artists, Melissa Etheridge finally signed her own deal in 1986.
Creating music with an indie folk rock spin to it, Melissa Etheridge began to release albums in 1988. Her fourth disc was her breakthrough album. Yes I Am was released in 1993 and peaked at Number 15 on the album chart. The first single from the disc, Come To My Window, became a signature tune in her career and reached Number 25 on the U.S. singles chart. Superstardom had arrived for this artist.
