Maxwell Artist Information
Maxwell's seductive lyrics, laid-back persona and good looks have made him an R&B sensation. He's often been compared to Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, yet with a more funk, jazz and hip hop style.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Maxwell began singing in his church choir, yet did not get serious about music until 17 when he started writing lyrics for a friend. By 1991, he was making a name for himself on the New York club scene. Three years later, he had a record deal with Columbia and recorded his first album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. The album went platinum, earning him a Grammy nomination.
Maxwell released two more albums between 1998 and 2001– Embrya and Now. Both albums hit high on the charts (#3 and #1 respectively), while earning platinum status. Maxwell's greatest success came with the 1999 single Fortunate, which ranked as the #1 R&B hit of the year in Billboard magazine. Maxwell's talents have also crossed over to the film industry where he contributed two songs to the soundtrack for The Best Man.
