| Dave Grohl had already achieved prime status as a stellar drummer from his work with the Washington, D.C. punk band Scream and his subsequent duties in the legendary band that changed the face of popular music, Nirvana. The untimely death of lead singer Kurt Cobain put an abrupt end to to Nirvana, but out of the ashes rose Dave Grohl's new project.
Dave Grohl wrote and played all the material for the first Foo Fighters record, then recruited some indie rock heavyweights to join him on tour. The original line-up consisted of Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate and Pat Smear from The Germs, who joined Nirvana as a touring guitarist toward the end of their career. Goldsmith and Smear left the band eventually, but recently Pat Smear has been playing with the band again at several live shows.
The Foo Fighters play rock and roll with a definite punk edge to it, but mix in a delicate touch to create a melodic sound for the ages. Dave Grohl has an uncanny knack for crafting music that is both heavy and full of pop hooks. With such a strong assortment of musicians, the Foo Fighters have enjoyed a career lasting over ten years, winning several Grammy Awards along the way, selling out arenas wherever they perform and show no sign at all of slowing down.
