Instrumental bands do not usually hold a listener's attention for long. Most people want to see and hear the lead singer. However, there are those rare occasions when a band that only plays its songs and never sings works. Explosions in the Sky are such a band.
The band began its career in 1999 in Austin, TX. They have released several discs to date, with one being the soundtrack for the 2004 movie, Friday Night Lights. Their music was also featured in season one for the televison series.
Explosions in the Sky play a dynamic style of music, mixing the best elements of indie-style prog rock, classic shoegazer music and no-wave. Think of a cross between Juno, Swervedriver and Sonic Youth. This is music designed to destroy your senses, yet do it in a very delicate manner. Explosions in the Sky employ a three-guitar attack with one of the guitarists occasionally picking up a bass. The music is crafted in a very elaborate manner, with each song telling a distinct story. Often times the songs run right into one another on disc, keeping the rhythm going, barely allowing you to take a breath from the previous blast of music. The band employs a formula made famous by Boston legends The Pixies, in that their songs have definite quiet moments that are almost a whisper at times, then leap into a wall of sheer power.
Live, Explosions in the Sky do not deviate from their formula one bit. You get a brief introduction when the members make their way onstage. Once the first note is struck, you are in for music experience that is utterly intense and brutal, yet beautiful. The members throw themselves into each song, playing with sincere emotion. You can tell their heart is truly in to expressing what they feel at that particular moment. You will leave the venue knowing you just witnessed what live music is supposed to be like.
