Art D'Lugoff, Off-Broadway Music and Theatre Impresario, Dies at 85
Art D'Lugoff, who, as the owner of the famed downtown Manhattan club The Village Gate, presented a wide variety of performance attractions over several decades, died Nov. 4. He was 85, and lived in Riverdale, The Bronx.

1879 Composer Rudolf Friml (1879-1972) is born in Prague. He will emigrate to the U.S. and become one of the top Broadway operetta composers of the 1910s and 1920s. His works will include The Firefly, Rose-Marie, The Vagabond King, The Three Musketeers and two editions of The Ziegfeld Follies(1921 and 1923).

1854 Birthday of John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), composer of countless marches, who also found time to write Broadway musicals including Chris and the Wonderful Lamp (1900), The Free Lance (1906), and The American Maid (1913). In The Music Man, it is his arrival in town that Prof. Harold Hill is describing in the song "76 Trombones," which is written in Sousa style. Composer Meredith Willson played in Sousa's band early in his career.
