Out of the ashes of the first wave of British Punk Rock rose a budding star by the name of Billy Idol. Tickets to see this veteran rocker are yours today from TickCo!
Born William Michael Albert Broad, Billy Idol first broke through as a player on the U.K. punk scene in a band by the name of The Rockettes. A year and two bands later Broad changed his name to Billy Idol and formed Generation X with bass player Tony James. Generation X, along with the Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned were vital bands of the U.K. punk scene.
Generation X played together until 1981. One of the last singles the band recorded was entitled Dancing With Myself. This was not a big single for Generation X, but became an important song in the solo career of Billy Idol. The song was remixed to make it more accessible in the New Wave music scene and released on Billy Idol's debut solo EP Don't Stop.
The self-titled debut full-length album Billy Idol was released in 1982. The disc contained the single White Wedding, which became a staple on new cable network MTV. A year later the Don't Stop EP was re-released. Mony Mony, a Tommy James cover, became a big hit for Billy Idol, with a live version of the song topping the charts in the U.S. in 1987.
The eighties were big for Billy Idol, with two Top Ten albums and seven Top 40 singles, including four in the Top Ten. Although there was very little activity from the star in the nineties, there has been a definite resurgence of his popularity in the millenium.
